What a glorious sunny day to be opening Sara Lee’s exhibition of new works ‘Beckoning Lines’. Lee’s beautiful pastel drawings lending a sense of calm contemplation to the space where ‘from within each image, the act of making is like walking a cloister.’

In Sara Lee’s Beckoning Lines the expanse of the landscape has no bearing to assess distance. Each is a desert of infinity where one is pulled into the nuance of surface.
Sara Lee walks and gathers. These are not journeys to be conquered and documented, they are space and time inhabited. The ‘being in’ the landscapes is a conduit of thought and experience. From this action the landscapes she creates are often universal; not specific of a particular vista. Later, the gathered building blocks – drawings, photographs, notes, poems, thoughts – are distilled to the concentrated frame of the image, where the line of the horizon is a tensile hair holding the DNA of place.
Rooted in a landscape tradition, Sara Lee’s images are a response to the ephemeral nature of terrain; a gentle and evocative connection between what is known and what is imagined or remembered. New works include original works on paper and ukiyo-e method Japanese prints and large relief prints. Sara Lee studied Printmaking at Central School of Art. London.
