Sara Lee – ‘Ley of the Land’

Ley of the Land: A Walking Journey Through Seasons
Sara Lee

This beautiful new publication is an evocative visual record of Sara Lee’s work following her residency at the Rabley Drawing Centre. Through drawing, print and photography she reflects on the nature of landscape in contemporary practice and celebrates the changing light and seasons of the rolling Wiltshire downs.

Sara Lee first joined Rabley Drawing Centre as Artist-in-Residence in 2013. She relocated from her London studio to the rural environs of Home Farm and Rabley Drawing Centre, spending time in the landscape each month. Inviting an artist to spend a year with us, visiting and revisiting this place throughout the seasons, is like planting a crop. She is now firmly established in the stable of artists at Rabley Contemporary. So the seed that was planted in 2013 has become a perennial, returning each year with fresh growth and ideas for new drawings and prints.

The Summer Exhibition at Rabley Drawing Centre brings together 15 artists from the Drawing and Print School. Each has made work that is highly individual within the creative and supportive Studio & Print Sessions at Rabley.

The regular Studio & Print sessions offer weekly ongoing creative development and support throughout the year. Experimental and conventional drawing underpins the variety of print disciplines. The school’s focus on developing work through new technologies including acid free and non – toxic printmaking has brought a vitality to the studio as each artist researches and develops the potential of their ideas through various media.

A stimulating dialogue with visiting artist tutors Meryl Ainslie, Sara Lee, Endellion Lycett Green, Nik Pollard, and Emma Stibbon RA, along with the support of Rabley Studio Printmaker Amy-Jane Blackhall, has enabled the development of exciting new work over the last year.

Royal Academy Exhibition

Hide and Seek

Drawings by Eileen Cooper RA

29 May — 23 August 2015

Eileen Cooper RA 'Hide and Seek' Royal Academy ADThis summer the RA celebrates the art of Eileen Cooper RA with an exhibition of drawings spanning almost 40 years of her career.

This exhibition, which coincides with the publication of a monograph celebrating Cooper’s career, presents drawings spanning almost 40 years. Cooper creates work that possesses a strongly poetic and distinctive vision, and the artist has been described as a ‘magical realist’. An accomplished painter and printmaker, Cooper’s practice has always been underpinned by drawing. This remarkable body of work illustrates how her distinctive imagery has developed through making drawings that explore such subjects as sexuality, birth, family, fecundity and creativity. We are delighted to display, as part of the exhibition, the artist’s gift to the Royal Academy Collections of ten previously unseen mixed-media drawings. These feature Cooper’s iconic female figures, and are multi-layered and complex in form.
